Common questions

The app named the wrong animal.

Identification is done by an AI model and it can be wrong, especially with look-alike species and distant or blurry subjects. On the result screen, tap Not the right animal? Fix it to choose one of the alternates or search for the right species.

It says I've used all my identifications.

Each phone gets a daily allowance (15 identifications on the free plan), shown under Me → Snaps with the time it resets. Snaps taken after you run out are saved and identified automatically after the reset. A photo with no animal in it is given back, up to five times a day.

How do I back up my walks and snaps?

Open Me → Your data → Back up and save the file to Files, iCloud or Drive. On a new phone, use Restore in the same place. Restoring only adds what's missing.

How do I delete my data?

Your walks, photos and field guide live only on your phone. Me → Your data → Reset all data deletes all of it and also deletes your anonymous account on our server. Uninstalling the app removes its data from the phone.

Why does Wildmiler want my location?

To record your walk route and to give the identifier a rough hint (rounded to about 1 km) for telling look-alike species apart. Walks still work if you choose "While Using" instead of "Always", but the screen has to stay on.

Does heart rate work without an Apple Watch?

Heart rate is optional and comes from Apple Health, so it needs an Apple Watch or another device that writes heart rate to Health. It never leaves your phone.

I lost my phone or changed phones.

Restore a backup on the new phone (see above). The anonymous account is tied to the install, so a new phone starts with a fresh daily allowance.
